Rural Broadband Needs: FCC Commissioner Carr

LaneCast Podcast: Millions of rural citizens across the nation do not have access to reliable broadband internet. 29 percent of U.S. farms and ranches have no access to the Internet according to a USDA’s Farm Computer Usage and Ownership report released in 2017. On this Podcast, FCC Commissioner Brendan Carr discusses the challenges and opportunities that are in the works to connect farmers, ranchers and rural citizens to reliable broadband internet.

The American Farm Bureau Federation reports that “for many rural communities, access can only be gained by using broadband services and sophisticated technologies that require high-speed connections.” AFBF added also stated that “according to the Federal Communications Commission, 39 percent of rural Americans lack access to 25 Mbps/3 Mbps service, compared to only 4 percent of urban Americans.”

Commissioner Carr shares first-hand accounts of his travels in the countryside and possible solutions to increase broadband access for rural America.
